Major milestone achieved at Swanbank CleanCo BESS project

It’s one of Queensland’s biggest battery projects and a major milestone has been accomplished with the first Tesla battery packs delivered to site. Yurika has partnered with CleanCo to build a 250MW/500MWh battery in Swanbank, as part of the Swanbank Clean Energy Hub.

In total, 138 Tesla battery energy storage system (BESS) megapacks will be installed on the site of the former Swanbank B coal-fired power station. Approximately the size of a shipping container, each battery pack is loaded onto the back of a truck and driven from the Port of Brisbane to the site at Swanbank, with five BESS delivered each morning, and another five each afternoon, over October and November.

Yurika Project Manager, Brendon Watts, says the project is on schedule for completion by mid-2025, adding significant energy storage to Queensland’s electricity network.

Each battery is unloaded and placed onto the concrete slab

“We currently have close to 65 workers on site and the team is firmly focused on getting each battery unloaded and positioned onto the concrete footings.

“Once safely positioned, we’ll get to work connecting the battery packs to a series of medium voltage transformers and high voltage infrastructure to transfer the stored power back to the grid.

“Our team is additionally supplying a 275/33kV substation and network connection that will continue to transfer the BESS energy for decades to come at critical times, to support the local community,” said Brendon.

The $330 million project will help provide a more sustainable grid for the Ipswich region by helping balance the peaks and troughs that occur naturally with renewable energy generation. It will also help maintain grid stability by responding within milliseconds to broader energy market demands.
